Fortunately they have been addressing this lately with various matching-grant programs to help improve the appearance of storefronts and such. There is still lots left to do but it has made a noticeable difference already.

I agree. Wood Street has some nice little boutique store fronts popping up.

Wow, it's been a while since I walked on that block of Smithfield, had no idea Villa Reale looked like that now. Looks pretty good!

Here is a picture that I took of it. It looks great! This is perhaps one of the oldest surviving buildings in downtown Pittsburgh. To me, it looks pre-Civil War, but that's just a guess. I wonder if it could possibly pre-date the Great Fire? Anyway, it's proof that these little buildings can be successfully adapted to new uses and thrive among much larger buildings.

Incidentally, it is also the building with The Two Andys mural on the side. This shot shows the mural and also gives some sense of what the storefront used to look like:
