Hi all! I am moving to Pittsburgh from Vancouver, BC, and I am not very happy about the move... It is an excellent opportunity for my husband, and this is the only reason why I agreed to move. I've been to Pittsburgh once so far and even though I generally liked it, my heart is not in the right place. I love everything about Pacific Northwest, particularly our beautiful nature and numerous opportunities for outdoor sports. I hike, snowboard, bike, and climb weekly depending on the season, and do various other outdoor activities. It is so easily accessible in Vancouver, I am worried that I won't be able to continue this lifestyle in Pittsburgh... Is there anyone here who was in a similar situation? Please share your experience! I really need some positive input from you!

I'm sure many are going to chime in about the numerous areas near pittsburgh where you can get your fix. Many will also mention our parks. I'd just like to mention our unique topography and suggest that you may find urban hiking as enjoyable as i do. All the nooks and crannies, cool views, bridges, steps, and architecture are unbelievable.

Kayaking is fun too.

Why wouldn't you be able to do those things in(or near) Pittsburgh?

I understand your trepidation to some extent, and I know that the Pacific Northwest is famous for its outdoor activities. But, as Caladium alluded to, we actually do have places to hike, as well as snow, bicycles, and mountains in Western Pennsylvania. I'm not sure what you're expecting, but it's not like you're moving to Chechnya.

One place to start: Venture Outdoors - Home, and Bike Pittsburgh, Bicycle Advocacy, Safety and Community in Pittsburgh » is very active as well.

Everything you listed can be done within an hour away from Pittsburgh.

There's nothing you do out there that can't be done here unless it's an ocean related activity.

Because snow sports season ends in March and mountains are not as high and there is no ocean? I do not know... I have never lived in mid-atlantic region and I panic!

Also...it is hard to explain...everyone around me now is doing the same thing and it is easy to find buddies for outdoor outings. And it is not awkward to tell your boss that you are taking a day off because it snows or that you won't work this weekend because the weather is too good to miss. I've heard east coast is not like that at all. That worries me!

Pittsburgh is the rare major city where "the outdoors" is available deep within the urban environment... thanks to our famously rugged "highly dissected plateau" topography. Everywhere you look there are lush forested hillsides. There may not be 4000m peaks here... but you will find a city endowed with more outdoors opportunities than most.

Pittsburgh is included in National Geographic's "Best Trips 2012":

its major assets: a natural setting that rivals Lisbon and San Francisco, a wealth of fine art and architecture, and a quirky sense of humor.

A few years ago... National Geographic proclaimed Pittsburgh a top "Adventure City":

This sort of integration into the natural setting is precisely what makes a top-notch adventure city, and, in achieving it, Pittsburgh has become a place where residents can be serious both about their careers and their outdoors.

Evergrey, thanks for the link! I forgot about this article, I actually saw it at some point and it contributed to the decision to come to Pittsburgh.
