I didn't like Greg Brown at all when he was first hired--but since then either the schick has grown on me a bit, or he's toned it down. But I totally get why people don't like the style.

However, it really strikes me as a really odd complaint that the guy who watches and announces every Pirates game *gasp!* likes and roots for the Pirates.

Not a thing wrong with rooting for the Bucs. It's great to have something to get excited about, but the excessive homer cheerleading is ridiculous.

The homerun off of Watson after walk was saying "he could get 3 outs on Christmas" made me think of Bob Uecker in Major League saying "he hit one that hasn't landed yet" and then took a shot of Jack. Much of this organization reminds me of that movie. Great stuff.

Watson should wear the "Rick Vaughn" glasses next outing. I can hear A.J., now: "Hey man, they look real nice".

Lanny was a good technician and knew his stats, but he was too much of a company man. The team was lousy for the last several years of his career, but he still tried to sugarcoat everything. He was good buddies with Gene Lamont. A typical Lanny phrase would be like "Tough road trip for the Buccos, but Geno and the boys will turn it around." I respect the fact that the Pirates signed his paycheck, but that crap is ok if you're talking to little kids or old ladies, not the grizzled fan that knows baseball and knew the Pirate had no chance of winning with a line up of minor leaguers. Real fans want you to lay it on the line. I lost all respect for him when he said that he could not imagine anyone else managing the Pirates when Gene Lamont's job was on the line. He called Geno a great manager and a "neat guy." Gene Lamont had the most boring personality of any coach in the bigs, and vanilla Lanny called him a "neat guy." This is when the team needed a guy like Jim Leyland, who would throw a plate of mac n' cheese on the wall during the post game spread if the team wasn't playing well. Lamont would just act comatose after losses, just like John Russell.

If he was a "company man", then Brown must be trying to carry the entire company.

At least now the team is decent if not downright good. This wasn't the case after 1992 through 2008, when Lanny retired. Lanny would talk about how his buddy Geno and the boys would show them what they were made of. They showed us alright. The showed us how bad they sucked. "There was no doubt about it."

The team is decent. They're not WS caliber, at least not with the current roster.

Don't think Brown isn't a "yes man". His ridiculous, over the top cheerleading is backed up by a similar check that Lanny cashed when he was in the chair, only Brown also helps Bucs brass, just as he laid the foundation to escort a fan favorite like Martin out of town well before he got overpaid. He's an over exaggerating extension of the PR department. Homers love him.

Greg Brown actually worked ten years with Pirates in the PR department before becoming a broadcaster. I guess he is continuing his job in the booth. That brings me to another point. Going to see a game at PNC park is too much geared towards kids. I understand that kids are the fans of the future, and they will bring their kids and so on. But the PR department has too many distractions away from the game on the field. It gets a bit annoying. I guess I am a traditionalist that just likes some organ music and the crack of the bat, not cartoons, loud rock, hip hop, fireworks, trivia, and on and on.
