Just curious if some Pittsburgh folks could weigh in on a question. Do you think a family could live nicely in the Pittsburgh burbs on 75k to 80k a year? Seems like that doesn't get you far in the Philly burbs. In case you were wondering probably not interested in living within city limits. Thanks.

yes - as long you buy a house within your budget, less than 250k should be no problem

That is a question that is both subjective and family-specific. What do you consider "live nicely"? Also, it can be entirely dependent on what your other financial obligations are - car payment, student loans, consumer debt, etc. For a quick and dirty answer, yes.

For a Single person no dependents yea that's Pittsburgh "Rich"...Not really "Rich" but more like top tier Affluent....but if that's a combined income that's pretty much standard Working Class/Middle Class in Pittsburgh. A combined income for Pittsburgh Top Tier Affluent would be north of 100K, 75-80K for family of four on a single income would still be pretty Middle Class even in the Burgh.

"Pittsburgh Rich" is a slang term for "you'll be poor as hell elsewhere but you're rich in Pittsburgh". For a single person with no dependents, $35k - $40k makes you "Pittsburgh Rich" and thus double that is inline with the slang term.

Also for the record $37,461 is the median household income which would place you in the middle class. 75-80k is world away from that even with a family.

I know what "Pittsburgh Rich" means or meant anyway.

I'm sorry but Pittsburgh is NOT that cheap.....if you want to live without penny pinching, and some serious budgeting.

35-40K for a Single, No Dependents is strong Middle Class, You're Not even Pittsburgh "Rich" in 2012 $$$

37K on a single income with a family of 4 is pretty much the poorhouse...You need a good solid 60K-80K income is needed for a decent Middle Class life in Pittsburgh in the year 2012. You of all people should know this as much as you B*tch about the COL nowadays in the Burgh.

Pittsburgh "Rich" had relevance back in 1999-2000....in 2012 Pittsburgh is not a whole lot cheaper than the rest of the Country....Sure "Housing" maybe cheaper that the Mega Coastal Cities, but everything else Pittsburgh is just as comparable, and even Pittsburgh "Housing" costs are starting to catch up to reality.

I stand by my original statement.
