VisitPittsburgh CEO Craig Davis forecasting 500-1,000 new hotel rooms by 2014 - Pittsburgh Business Times

Quote:
...

Craig Davis, who became president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh in March, said the region’s ability to maintain an overall occupancy rate of about 70 percent will only help ease the way for more hotels in the area.

...

Pittsburgh’s hotel trade has thrived due to demand from a broad base of sources, including strong business travel stemming from the city’s banking and financial industry, ongoing film production and activity related to the Marcellus Shale, Davis said. At the same time, the convention center is well booked and Pittsburgh continues to see new tourist interest.

Good!
There have been two times so far this fall when we wanted a hotel room, only to find zero rooms that were reasonable priced.

(by which I mean NO suites/oversized rooms, as there are just two of us)

As mentioned in the article, in the nearish future there could be two new hotels Downtown, and two in East Liberty. Then there is that Lawrenceville project.

They're sorely needed. My partner's parents tried to book a hotel room recently to come in over Columbus Day Weekend, and everything they could find in the city in their price range (low-$100s/night) was booked solid. They're staying at the Comfort Suites in O'Hara Township, which is also where my own parents will be staying next weekend. Pittsburgh is under-retailed, under-apartmented, and under-hoteled!

Considering that the political parties cited lack of hotel space for not bringing either presidential convention to Pittsburgh in as early as 2004, maybe Pgh will now be in the running for 2016 or in the future?

Even the hotels on either the North Shore or South Side, and the Hampton Inn in The Strip are asking for $200.00 per night plus during weeknights this summer. I got a room on Hotwire recently for $110.00 per night. They gave me the Holiday Inn Express on the South Side. It was on a Wednesday. Downtown hotels are asking for a rack rate in the high 200s right now. Demand and occupancy has been so good at the Fairmont that they are asking nearly 400 per night. I work in the industry. During a hotel event today, our GM for one of the major Downtown hotels talked about how great business has been and looks like it will continue for the rest of the year. There has long been a lot of talk of building an other major hotel, it never seems to happen.
