Pittsburgh has many 2-story homes, even 3-story homes occassionally. What are somethings you really liked about 2-story homes over a single-story home?

Equally, what are some things that you just couldn't stand?

One nice aspect of a two story home is having the bedrooms separated from the living room/family room, not entirely sure if this is what you are going for

I agree. A negative in these older homes is that usually the only bathroom is also upstairs.

Actually, in a lot of the older homes in Pittsburgh, the original bathrooms were all in the basement- not on the 2nd floor.

I actually randomly thought about this yesterday...while working in my attic, I needed a screwdriver from the basement...that is 3 flights down, and 3 flights back up....and I had to do it about 4 times over the course of 30 mins....I can't help but believe that this also plays a role in the growing waistlines of Americans....every thing on one level really cuts down on incidental exercise....

That said, I grew up in a ranch, the the main requirement when buying a house was that it was 2 stories, and had an open staircase. As a kid, Christmas morning was imagined as running down the steps, looking over the banister and seeing the loot that Santa left under the tree in the living room...there is just something not as exciting as running down a hallway into a living room....

Laundry is a hassle in my three story home. The laundry is in the basement. That's three flights of stairs to the third floor.

Fortunately we're back to only using the first and second floor. The third floor is mostly storage now.

Nothing else really bothers me about it, but it's clear that we'll need to switch to a stairless house when we're older.

My house is what's called one and a half stories, I guess. If you come in the front door, you're upstairs where the living room and bedrooms are, you go downstairs for the kitchen and the basement, which is actually behind the dining room.

Many of these older 2 and 3 story homes had laundry chutes.

PS: laundry chutes are also like primitive communication systems....you can converse through them floor to floor

My parents' house has a laundry chute. It only worked one way (down). You had to carry the clothes back up.
