Would like to see if there are any of these style homes around western PA yet? Would be interesting to see how much one would cost? Thanks for the help!

Someone from google had one built on a small lot in Shadyside:
Pittsburgh Steeler | Dwell

I contacted the architect, and the cost he estimated was $175 per sq. ft. not including high-end features and land acquisition costs.

Also, I believe the mayor of Braddock has one on top of his warehouse.

You can build one yourself relatively cheap.... $175ft is extreme

Personal experience? I've always been intrigued by them too. I would have to imagination that permitting and inspection and all that junk makes it a lot more difficult than just buying a couple, welding them together, and living in it.

Yeah, the Mayor of Braddock has one.

$175 per square foot is consistent with what I've seen online. Sure, it's way cheaper to do on your own. Most of us don't have that capacity, though, haha.

I've also read on a few shipping container blogs that it can be a challenge to get the various forms of approval that you need from the local government, since they are unorthodox homes.

So, basically the entire purpose of my post is to corroborate rockthecasbah121.

Are they insulated? The article says it gets cross-currents, but I can imaginee on a hot day it could be like being in a toaster oven.

I thought this was an excellent idea, til I read a few articles like this one. I'd be very leery now, and recommend you take extra precautions if you decide to do this.

Since seeing this thread I've been searching all over. It's amazing what people could do with old unused shipping containers. I am wondering how would the locals feel about these being erected here?
