It sounds like a tornado siren or some kind of alert that goes off at specific times of the day - not a traveling ambulance or police car. It's happening right now (11am on a Saturday), and we hear it at night time as well in our apartment to the west of Wilkinsburg on Trenton near Penn. Anyone know what this is?

My initial guess would be they are trying to notify volunteer firefighters that there is a fire- but I thought that Wilkinsburg had a paid force that merged with Pittsburgh.

Maybe its coming from neighboring Edgewood?

It is Wilkinsburg.

It's used to dispatch firefighters, and it also sounded at night. I usually notice it around 9:45pm, so there may be a 10pm curfew, not sure.

That's Swissvale's siren for their 10:00 pm curfew. Maybe Wilkinsburg has started doing it also, but I'm not aware of it.

Wow. I have to get up for work at 5 AM. If I was roused from a sound sleep every weeknight at 10 PM because thug trash had to be told via a SIREN to get off the streets and go to bed for school I'd be at every borough council meeting spouting off.

The "air raid sirens" are one of the strangest things I had to get used to when moving up here. I had no idea what was going on when I first heard it! I soon realized it's the volunteer fire stations sirens, most of the townships in this area use them. But it still makes me want to check the skies for Japanese Zero fighters or duck and cover to prepare for nuclear detonation lol. It just seems to be a very odd sound to use in 2012 for anything other than a tornado warning.

I was perfectly used to it, because as you state, it is used by many fire departments all over the commonwealth. Many of the smaller towns in PA blow the siren at noon
