They didn't do that stuff when I was a kid. Kids these days are coddled and are wimps.

It's not just that. The buses with the newer diesel fuel have trouble starting when it gets this could. I think the extra two hours just gives them more time to prepare the fleets. I know South Fayette actually had to cancel two days a couple of years ago because they couldn't get over half of the buses started. The fuel lines were completely gelled up.

I also find the delays odd and unnecessary, and it affected my job today too. Several of our employees with young kids were late today because they couldn't drop off their kids earlier on the way to work like they normally do. One woman said there were lines of parents at her school waiting to drop the kids off, but they wouldn't open the school doors until a few people went up and started banging on the window, saying they needed to get to work. As everyone mentioned, there was hardly any temperature increase in those 2 hours. All the delays did was tick everyone off.

This is exactly right. It really doesn't have anything to do with the kids standing in the cold. It is about getting the buses started and/or cleaned off unless maybe you live in Mt Lebo were they have no buses.

This makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

Yeah, strangely, for as much as this reason makes sense and I agree it likely has a lot to do with it, Mt Lebanon is having the same delays. Might be a "go with the flow of 200 other posted delays" thing though.

Schools have been delaying because of cold temperatures for over 10 years now.

My dad (a former bus garage foreman) said they didn't want to pay the guys overtime to get the buses started, hence the two hour delay.

If buses need extra time to get started on really cold days, then this makes sense. It also occurred to me that parents these days cold be more negligent than in the past, and send kids out with proper clothing. But, as Sparrowmint said, it doesn't appreciably warm up in those two hours, which makes TechCom's answer seem pretty good. Should have known it was about money.
