What are we calling the Hill District, Strip District, and Polish Hill, then, if they're east of Downtown and between the rivers but not in the East End? "No Man's Land"?
The Hill District, the Strip District and Polish Hill are part of downtown.

As a young lower-middle-class couple my partner and I have been virtually priced out of the "safe" parts of the East End and have now expanded our search to the North Side and West End (we have no desire to leave the city). We're finding many wonderful homes in historic neighborhoods at much lower price points than what you'd find in the East End, where it's hard to find anything that's not a fixer for under $100,000. East Deutschtown, Brighton Heights, Crafton Heights, Troy Hill, Elliott, Brookline, Summer Hill (or is it Observatory Hill?) and Beechview are some neighborhoods outside the rapidly-appreciating East End that are generally safe and still conveniently-located to amenities. I realize the majority of city residents live in the East End, but that's no reason to write off the rest of the city.

P.S. Not to be too much of a stalker, but I looked up your home, youngabe, through cross-referencing recent sales on Trulia and the county's tax assessment site (I WAS an auditor, after all!), and I really like it! Congratulations on the recent purchase!
Thanks! After all, it is public information. My vote for the city limits was easy. Sure, I have the 3% wage tax, but put that house of mine in Mt. Lebanon or even in Washington or Allegheny Townships in Westmoreland County near where I grew up and it would easily be $175,000+ with sky high taxes. For someone who does not have children in my foreseeable future, the city limits was a no brainer. I got a house that was built like a bomb shelter, in great condition, and for a great price.

I live in Stanton Heights and love it. I live on the edge of Morningside, so I get the best of both worlds, because I can walk to the business district, but have have an integral garage and larger yard then you would get in Morningside. I looked in Morningside when I was buying but some of the homes are really small. Were talking 10x10 master bedrooms. For the same amount of money you could get an integral garage and 1600 sq ft in Stanton Heights. Not to say that is huge but much bigger than Morningside.

I though the east end started east of Oakland.
