Hi, like the Peabody in Memphis and the Fairmont in San Francisco, does the city of Pittsburgh have a hotel that was once (and possibly still is) the epitome of glamour and service where Hollywood filmstars and Presidents, etc; would stay?

The William Penn is the only real grand old hotel still in that use that I can think of. Flies the Omni flag at present. Oops, Tinare beat me to it.

William Pitt Union (though no longer a hotel - used to be the Schenley Hotel and was as high end as they come :-)

Yes it did. Gorgeous old building that complements the Cathedral quite nicely.

In the 19th century the epitome of sophistication was the Monongahela House downtown. Abraham Lincoln stayed there. These days I would say the William Penn is the grand old hotel and the Fairmont the nicest new one.

The Hotel Webster Hall at Fifth and Dithridge -- now a CMU dorm? -- used to be nice. I don't know if it was grand, exactly, but it was a lot nicer than the William Penn, whose exterior was nearly completely blackened, in the early '70s.

Thank you for the replies everyone, much appreciated, I'm thinking of a stopover between Washington and Toronto, not sure if I'll actually be staying at the W Penn though!

Even though it's not a "historic" hotel, the Renaissance is IMO the nicest restoration of an older building into a hotel. It's lobby is much grander than the William Penn's.

I stayed there during my first-ever visit to Pittsburgh and it was a very well-done rehabilitation of that building. The William Penn looks gorgeous too in the lobby, though I have never stayed in it.

I wonder what the Penn Lincoln was like on the inside - probably not as grand. The hulk is still standing to this day, though.
