Looking to spend one day/night in Pittsburgh. We would like it to be a mainly pedestrian area with lots to see, shop and restaurants to chose from...as well as a relatively safe area to spend the day. I have heard of Waterfront, but never been there. Would this be a good choice? Also looking for the best hotel to stay at in any given recommended area. It will be mid-week and not a Friday or Saturday night if that matters in the recommendations...thank you in advance.

The Waterfront isn't really walkable, only a small portion of it. It's more chain stores you'd find in suburbia.

I'm going to say South Side because it has both shopping worlds---eclectic shops on Carson Street and the chain stores in South Side Works.

It's bigger than any of our other neighborhoods so you really could spend a whole day there.

Thanks, Hopes! I was wondering, a while back an old friend of mine sent me a photo during Christmas where he was visiting Pittsburgh and there was an ice skating rink with a Christmas tree in the middle. The area looked very nice in the photo.

Probably PPG Place downtown at Market Square. Lots of good restaurants there. What do you like?

If you stay downtown, you could enjoy PPG place and the Strip District and then catch a taxi over to South Side. It's right across the river.

Don't stay in the Waterfront. It's nothing but chain restaurants and stores. It's got no character, and aside from being on the site of a former steel mill, there's nothing uniquely Pittsburgh about it.

I'd stay in the Southside. Carson Street has a ton of restaurants and shops, and you could easily spend a day exploring them. It's also the nightlife capital, so you could get a drink before going back to the hotel. It's also pretty close to the Strip, which you absolutely have to go to in the morning.

There's a Holiday Inn Express on 10th Street, and a Hyatt House in the back of the SouthSide Works, between 27th & 28th streets.

Thanks all! What is "It's also pretty close to the Strip, which you absolutely have to go to in the morning."?

The Strip District is a urban market area near downtown. It's worth a visit but not the entire day.

You can take a taxi from the South Side to there. Ask the driver how to get a taxi back to South Side.

Stay at the Courtyard in the "cultural district". That way you can hit both the Strip and Downtown.

I think it's better to stay in the South Side (not Station Square) than Downtown because it's easier to catch a taxi from downtown back to a hotel in South Side than it is to catch a taxi from South Side back to a hotel located Downtown. They'll only spend a couple of hours at the Strip District. They'll spend much more time in the South Side.
