Pittsburgh Comic Arts Festival is tomorrow plus the National Cartoonists Society is holding its convention in Pittsburgh to coincide with it.

Comics take center stage at festival, convention in Pittsburgh | TribLIVE

where the comic artists' equivalent of the Oscars is being awarded...The Rueben Awards. Naturally a lot will be centered around the Toonseum.

As I said before, I'd like to see the Toonseum become the foremost comics museum of which there are surprisingly few. Stuff like Comic-Con is a hot draw and while Pittsburgh will never knock off Comic-Con San Diego, it would be nice to be counted among the more significant convention sites. Course, this is not Comic-Con Pittsburgh but maybe some of the similar Pittsburgh Cons should be combined to create a sort of "critical mass" like Atlanta's Dragon*con has achieved.

Although, as far as this event is concerned, comic-strips might be an endangered species as they have relied on syndication in newspapers. We'll have to see if the internet can sustain it as an art/entertainment form. But the cartoon as a broad genre will never disappear...but the rampant copyright infringements won't help. Interesting Trib story in that comic strip artists used to be celebrities around 50 years ago. Shame that today it's hard for comic strip artists to make a living out of it let alone become a millionaire.

Apparently the Toonseum has expansion plans.

Pittsburgh's ToonSeum eager to expand - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The idea is to move to the North Shore and be among The Mattress Factory and The Warhol art museums. Or they might move closer to the August Wilson and share facilities while also exhibiting black cartoonists.

I'd like to see some sort of Foundation for the Toonseum to assure its continuation after the present owners are gone. It's the sort of art museum that would be popular to people of all ages and be a nice anchor for future comics related Cons. And really, Pittsburgh Comic-con should move from Monroeville to David L Lawrence and become more of a social event than a flea market.

Comic book geek, here. I would have been there except for a previous engagement. The speakers they had there was amazing.

Comi-con in Monroeville does a great job. Don't know that moving it to the DLL center will help. Parking is free at the mall, and most comic book geeks ain't rich n'at..

Somewhat off topic, but my son just got back from FanimeCon in San Jose, CA. Is there anything like it in Pittsburgh? He's moving with me and I'm sure he'd like to go if they have a similar event.

That seems pretty much the same as the furries. They come to Pittsburgh every year.

I suppose Tekkoshocon is the next best thing.

The past convention was at David L Lawrence last April.

Not according to my son. He likes anime. He doesn't like the furries. He would never go to one of their events.

I saw a video on youtube of some of Pittsburgh's Comic-con. You walk in and grab a bag and shop...right? What happens after hours?

This sounds a little closer to what he likes.

I don't know, only went out there during the day. I mainly went there to sell my comic books from the 60's. There is a lot of buy/selling/trading that goes on. It just cracks me up when I see guys my age dressed as Superman or Jedi Knights.
