that is fascinating. and hard to believe that manhattan is 'green' on that map.

as an aside, i swear to you that among myself, siblings, and many cousins, the city dewellers (me and one another, from philadelphia) seem the happiest. the others seem souless. i attribute this to an overly car-dependent lifestyle. there are other minor factors, im sure (like the stress of young children, etc.).

people who insist on driving (even city dwellers) do not want to hear this, though, or dont care. im very interested in reading this thread from here on in.

This is the opposite of my experience. My peers/co-workers that live in Wexford, Cranberry, and Robinson seem far happier than those who are living in the city, at least on the surface.

I wouldn't call it an offence, but a different lifestyle.

Is this a joke, or are you being serious?

Causing more greenhouse emissions is a lifestyle choice?

My experience is opposite. The happy people i do see are in the city. The areas you mentioned are a lot more tense. More people in a sour mood out there. The unhappy people in the city are suburbanities that commute here for work everyday.

Correct. It is legal and as such it is a choice. Otherwise it would have indeed been an offence.

Why is it surprising? The two largest things which contribute to carbon emissions are transportation and housing (the latter due to heating, power, construction, ect). People in Manhattan might be rich, but they live in small domiciles in big apartment buildings (meaning heating is cheap) and they walk and/or use the subway as transportation.
