5% yearly increase in population for the city would mean 188,000* more people by the end of ten years. I don't think that we're going to do that.
It's only going to be a fraction of that, but this has been a long, slow process.

Allegheny and Butler Counties added 2,007 people, while Armstrong, Beaver, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties subtracted 2,129 people.
I have different numbers than you do for some of the counties. (Sorry for resurrecting an old thread). I did a count from 2012 to 2013 and I still saw positive growth, and I remembered this thread saying there was negative. Its miniscule, I know.

2010

1,223,348 - Allegheny County
365,169 - Westmoreland County
207,820 - Washington County
183,862 - Butler County
170,539 - Beaver County
136,606 - Fayette County

Might be a microcosm of a worldwide population decline in the West and other places. And I was taught as a kid that the future would be a world population explosion.

It still is in the third world. It seems odd to me Washington County would go from +896 to -510 considering all of the Marcellus Shale work and energy companies opening offices especially in that area.

My take is Pittsburgh and Allegheny County will gain population in the next few years, thanks mainly to economic spin off from CMU-PIT and continued growth in support services for the former fortune 500 type corporations that once called Pittsburgh headquarters city. That being said, the overall MSA will continue to lag or drop in population and the Pittsburgh market will fall to the upper 20's.
To many communities in the Pittsburgh market that are isolated from Pittsburgh and have lost most or all economic status and industrial base. The vast majority of these communities will never recover their lost economic standard. These suffering communities lumped together will pull the overall Pittsburgh Market standing downward and combined with numerous other growth markets, Pittsburgh's overall market will continue to slide. Wouldn't be surprised to see the city population reach 340.000 in a few years and the County population 1.250.000 while the overall market looses population.

You've reached the same conclusion that I have. I believe that Pittsburgh and Allegheny County will continue to grow and prosper, but that'll get washed out by losses in the remainder of the metropolitan area, especially now that growth in Butler County has slowed down.

It seems a lot of the new job growth locally in the gas industry.

Do you guys/gals believe washington county is doing worse than allegheny when it comes to population growth? I know they are estimates, but it seems southpointe, south strabane, canonsburg areas are the most robust with new office buildings being constructed and filled up with tenants. Maybe east liberty ( city) is the only other area that comes close. Cranberry seems to have leveled off with growth.
There's still plenty of growth along the I-79/U.S. 19 corridor in Washington County, but you gotta remember that the eastern end of the county is part of the mid-Mon Valley, and includes moribund towns like Monongahela, Donora and Charleroi. Losses in those towns and the surrounding areas have mostly offset the gains in the northern part of the county, much the same way that losses in Homestead, Braddock, Duquesne, McKeesport, Clairton and the surrounding areas have offset gains in the northern and western suburbs of Allegheny County until recently.
