This my non-authoritative personal formulation of what neighborhoods constitute the "East End". It seems to agree with your definition of "not-East End".

Moby Hick:
"If you actually lived in the East End, the commute may have been more tolerable."

I lived on Savannah ave for close to 3 years, Whitney for another 3 years, moved to Swissvale for 2 years, lived in Greenfield for 2 more years. My point was the commute thru that area between Pennwood and Oakland could be done quicker on my bike. I did actually live in the East End and I can comment on this stuff from first hand knowledge my man.

East End (Pittsburgh) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"According to another source, East End is the first neighborhood in the world to be electrified. It first used direct current until in 1887 when it switched to alternating current with Westinghouse Electric."

Today I learned!

But I get the sense when people say "East End", they're rarely referring to Homewood or Hazelwood or Lincoln-Lemington.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia states "The East End is home to the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow University, Chatham University, The Carnegie Institute's Museums of Art and Natural History, Frick Art & Historical Center (Clayton and the Frick art museum), Phipps Conservatory, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, and the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium...."

I always count Oakland as the East End also.

Yeah, it's also a social term. It basically means "where rich white people and/or students live."

I'll bet you guys ten years ago everyone would have excluded Lawrenceville from the East End.

Although that's true, how else would you categorize those neighborhoods?

The list in the Wikipedia section is a decent colloquial definition, but I see no reason why all neighborhoods east of Oakland, the Hill, and the Strip between the rivers couldn't be considered "East End". Diluting the appeal of the term by including not-so-nice neighborhoods isn't a good enough reason to exclude them in my opinion.

I get confused on that, too. I used to think it was a smaller and much more specific area, but I guess it's been expanded now to include places like Polish Hill. Makes sense I guess to just use it to mean anything on the east side of downtown.

to use a comparison for an area I lived for much longer: that's like saying Arlington, crystal city IS DC when in fact it is not (ok, it WAS way back in the day but that's for history thread and not here). its a few miles apart, the Anacostia river seperates them and its in a whole different state.

just because its close doesn't mean its part of the city. While you're at it, add Monroeville as Pittsburgh and pretty much anything south until somerset too.
