Given his other numbers he's used, he'd need about 60 of them.

Then I guess his storage unit is as big as a pool, in which case a few bucks for shelves would not be an issue!

Lumber is expensive. Plus you'll need to pay someone to make them.

Used metal shelving will be cheaper.

So a $125 metal shelf unit is cheaper than one made out of untreated 2x4 held together with lag bolts ??

Some of you have never been inside a home improvement store --- or done simple math

That's because I need more than 5 of those shelves --- prolly at least 25 or 30. Besides, I would need to stack those units two high, and they don't look easy to stack (prolly need a forklift).

It seems like many of you responding don't know the price of cheap lumber or cheap labor. What I got in my head is a broke college kid who has some experience running a power saw and drill and letting him go at it for a couple days making these shelves. I would think paying him $500-$800 is a decent price for 2 days of work (7-8 hrs. per day)? Why does that sound unreasonable?

Those used shelves in that link were $25. You can find some even cheaper than that too.

We do all of our own home improvements. I'm not talking mere aesthetics.

Let's do simple math!

You say metal shelves are $125. If you bought them, it would cost $5000. That's 40 shelf units.

In your first post, you said you're hoping to pay someone $800 for the labor to build shelves. I'll roughly estimate $35 in materials for each shelf unit. That's $1,400 for 40. $1,400 + $800 = $2,200 for wood shelving.

Those metal shelf units on Craig's List are $25. 40 of those would be $1,000.

Here's what I did: Bought a cheap ladder $25 on Craigslist to leave in the storage unit. Labeled each container with a rough listing of the contents. Stacked them so that the ones I need to get into frequently are accessible, but the ones that are deep storage are at the back of the unit and/or on the bottom of stacks. I left a bare spot on the floor as well as a pathway from front to back. All containers are lined up along the same wall, from front to back of the unit. Don't need no steenking shelving. ymmv LOL

$35 in raw materials for each shelf is still too high. Stock 8-ft. untreated 2x4 at Home Depot retails for around $2.50. I'm guessing I would need about 8 of these per "8 ft. high X 3 ft. wide" shelf unit. 3" length self-tap lag bolts are around 25 cents each so prolly need 25 of those per shelf unit.

$2.50 x 8 = $20
$0.25 x 25 = $6.25
TOTAL = approx. $25 per 8 ft. high shelf unit (after small discount buying in bulk)

Here's a photo of what I got in mind. I wouldnt even need plywood for the shelves since most of my stuff is already in sturdy plastic tubs that could simply rest on the 2x4 cross beams:

I like your way of organizational thinking, and I did the same with my plastic tubs.

However, I got so many containers that I got 2 rows on either side of the unit stacked about 10 feet high. In order to access containers in the back row, I have to do a lot of moving of the stacked containers in front of them, and this causes me much misery and time.

This photo shows the idea what I'd like to build --- up to the ceiling of the storage unit (12-15 ft. high) on both sides. I would use your ladder idea to access the upper shelves:

You're at $1,000 for 8 shelving units measuring 8' x 3' x 1' (like your description and first picture) with $800 labor.

It would be $200 for 8 of the metal ones. They are 8' x 3' x 1'.

Even if you doubled them back to back for 8' x 3' x 2' that's $400 for 8 of the metal ones.

With your first post, how did you come up with $5,000 for 8 shelving units? Even at $125 each, that would only be $1,000.

And you were saying we're the ones who can't do simple math. Okay.

You seem set on having these custom made even if they're more expensive. That's cool. I hope you find someone.
