I've heard that the property taxes in Pitts are some of the highest in the nation. So, someone please tell me about how much I'd be paying in property tax for a 50k dollar home or shed some light to this.?

In the city, it would be about $1,500. Each municipality has their own local and school tax millage.

Default Pittsburgh Taxes

There is an Allegheny County website (the tax assessor's office, I believe) that will give you the tax rates for any particular area of the county. They differ widely, but certainly seem to be high relative to most other areas of the country. Then again, real estate prices are very low comparatively, so take your pick: high prices or high taxes.

You should be able to find the website with a G**gle search...

Arrow I Found the Website Address

If you want to know the property tax rate in a certain municipality in Allegheny County, use the following website. It is a government site maintained by the county treasurer. You just click on the particular municipality in which you are interested. In spite of indicating that it shows school district tax rates (millages), when you go to a certain municipality it actually shows all the tax rates that apply there.

I have a 65,000 house and pay 2,100 total. That includes county, borough and school district. My brother in Denver has a 400,000 dollar house and pays the same amount. Guess where we're moving to the end of next year?

A $200K house in the South Hills could be roughly $6500 in property taxes, plus income taxes. If you're income is $100K, add about $3000 in State and Local income taxes. Plus pay the highest transit prices in the nation with Pat Transit.

Yep... Allegheny county also just passed a 10% drink tax on all poured drinks in the county, and a $3.00/day tax on rental cars...

One of the worst counties in the country to live in.

are city taxes assessed on the market value of the house or is the assessed value below the market rate?

Generally the county tax assessment has been used as the tax base for local communities. Some school districts might be over-riding this. We are going through a new assessment currently. It is done in sections and will take 3 years. I believe it started in the east so you can look there to observe the newest changes. In Oakmont the 2010 local assessment value is higher than the county.
