Barq, do you HAVE to go to Pitt. Many schools (not Pitt, as far as I know), offer even graduate classes online. Harvard University, too!

Check it out - you'd be surprised. Here are some that I know of - Stanford, one of the Colorados, University of New York/Buffalo, U of Wisconsin/Platteville, one of the Mississippis, etc.

You live in Alexandria? Old town?

Honestly, it sounds like a horrible idea. It makes no sense to commute 250 miles just to attend Pitt, especially considering that your field of study is widely available. There are tons of schools in NoVA, DC, and Maryland; just transfer your credits and go somewhere locally.

The cheapest you will find an Air BnB room is $50/night. I would guess that the cheapest rooms will not necessarily be accessible via public transportation. If you do not have a car, you will probably be looking at a higher nightly rate.

A round-trip bus ticket from DC will cost $50, while a roundtrip train ticket will be at least $100.

So, if you come up via bus weekly and stay only one night, you will be looking at $400/month. If you stay two nights per week, it bumps up to $600/month.

If you come up by train, you are looking at $600/month for one night per week and $800/month for two nights per week.

All of the numbers listed above are minimums. Depending on the time of year and availability, the ticket rates for the bus and train will fluctuate, and as mentioned Air BnB room rates vary widely.

You haven't done so great at Pitt while working and going to school. IT is a time-intensive major. It seems to me that you either need to do one or the other full time, and if you're going to work, at least make it a helpdesk job or babysit a NOC or something not completely unrelated. You certainly do not need to add 10 hrs of round trip commuting, you have trouble with focus as it is. Pitt still doesn't have the network security coursework (or jobs) you wanted, compared to DC, so I don't see the point.

If I were dead-set on going to school without living full-time in Pittsburgh, I simply would no longer go to school in Pittsburgh.

Go to GMU. It's fairly inexpensive, close to Alexandria, and offers a fairly decent computer science program.

Most college students live away from their friends and family while they go to college. You just need to suck it up and get it done. You're putting more obstacles in your way with this new plan.

I think it is best for you in every way to work and live in the DC area. You were here and complained nonstop. Why be involved in Pittsburgh? Goodness, you move out and get a job down there for goodness sake!
