By the Pittsburgh area I mean the seven counties. Has there ever been any studies done on this?

If you can't afford to live in the seven county area I don't think you "go" anywhere. You either go homeless or go live with family or friends somewhere else in the country. Rural living costs don't fluctuate across the country as much as urban living costs do.

Has anyone really ever been priced out of the entire Pittsburgh metro area?

That question was asked on the last version of this thread, I knew I had deja vu.

grep suggested Honduras earlier.

IIRC the issue was renting, not owning, and the OP and SO not being able to work but not wanting to live anywhere too sketchy. It is kind of hard to find a nice place for sub $500 for two.

But does that mean that one is necessarily "priced out" of the area? You can't get a cup of coffee for a nickel, either, unless you have a time machine.

If they have a job, they can afford to live in the area.

If they don't have a job, they go out to California where the weather is nice, the SSI checks are larger and there are a lot of rich people with spare change that are cool with the homeless.

Then panhandlers on Forbes and Murray seem to be doing okay.

Personally I found a much better employment opportunity and the corresponding better lifestyle by moving from Washington county (where taxes are much lower) to the city. Not sure I understand what "priced out" actually means. I think perhaps people who find it too expensive to live here probably should look more closely at their spending habits. I am pretty comfortable and I make just under 30k.

I don't think this would work! How would they find the money to get to CA and once there I wouldn't count on benevolence from rich people.
