So far everybody has done a good job on the pros and cons, I wanted to add something:
"Every week or so I get an email alert from campus about a robbery involving a student victim. But those typically occur at 2 am in a dark alley off campus. There are some nasty neighborhoods bordering the area."

The CMU campus is in one of the safest areas of Pittsburgh and does not border any nasty neighborhood. Sure there are crimes, but the area CMU is located in is very safe. Oakland at night can be sketchy here and there, but Oakland itself is a fine neighborhood. Good luck!

Good to know. This was something I was a bit concerned about, but most people claim they feel safe in the area. Nothing good happens at 2am in most places.

That's pretty much it. I got the same email alerts when I was working at CMU and they were almost always in th wee hours if the morning on streets between CMU and Shadyside where a lot of students live and were hold-ups. If you were a criminal looking for easy pickings for mugging, an area with a lot of fairly wealthy 19 year olds walking around alone on residential streets at 2 a.m. is pretty much the promised land. The neighborhoods themselves are not sketchy, but criminals do own cars or have bus fare.

CMU has after hours escort shuttle services. After about 11 pm, I suggest you use them if you're going off campus.
