Can someone explain to me how I can get a sense of comparing the tax costs of living in various places around PGH?

From what I can see, there are Municipal property taxes, school taxes, and county taxes.

Is this all of them? And if so, are they all based off of your assesment value of your property?

For example, if I look at Murrysville vs Mt Lebanon, here's what I see

Murrysville:
School: 88.5
Municipal: 12.05
County: 20.99

Mt. Lebanon:
School: 23.15
Municipal: 4.51
County: 4.37

If the assesed value is $100k , would I simply multiple these rates times 100 and add them up to get the yearly tax bill associated with each place?

Thanks for any help!!!

"Assessed value" of the property is the key, and it may not look anything like the market value of your property. And that's fine, as long as it conforms with the values of other properties in your county.

Comparing assessed value of properties in 2 different counties really doesn't give you an idea as to the relative levels of taxation.

The quick answer is $3229 for Mt. Lebo and $12072 for Murrysville. Allegheny uses 100% assessed value times the millage rate, Westmoreland around 20%. A 300K sold price in Murrysville shows taxes of $5279 based on an assessed value of $43730. A 300K home in Lebo assessed at 300K would yield $9717 in taxes.

Unless the municipality re-assesses you at the sales price. It's hard to argue against that.
