Pittsburghers will soon be able to pay for parking with smartphones | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

This is good.

I especially like this :

Quote:
When your time is about to expire, the system sends you a message, and you can remotely add time — as long as the total doesn't go beyond the two-to-four-hour limit for that meter.

I was stuck somewhere the other day and could not get back to the meter, I was wondering why that was not an option on their website.

I thought that the whole purpose of feeding the meter was to be able to park there longer than the maximum time limit.

This online feature wouldn't allow me to do this remotely. So it only really works when I'm parked at a 2hr limit meter, went for lunch and only paid for one hour but got delayed and need to add another 30 minutes or so...

Oh well, I was never a big fan of paid parking anyway.

Yeah it only works when you aren't disregarding the parking ordinances for the spot you are parking in. If you are trying to break the rules you are going to have to do it the old fashioned way.

While I've never had an issue paying for parking, it's a pleasure when you have parking lots that you don't have to deal with it. So many signs, rules, times, ordinances, etc..., is pretty ridiculous.

This is great and will make it even easier. The new meters themselves are a vast improvement over the old coin meters, and this capability means that you never have to worry. Most parking is free in a lot of areas after 6 pm anyway.

Yes! And you don't have to keep getting rolls of quarters from the bank...

Good news. Had this service where I used to live. Very convenient, especially if you don't have change. Of course, they probably charge a fee on top of the parking fee for using the service. At least they did where I used to live. Still cheaper than a parking ticket.

The current meters take quarters, although of course you can chose to pay off you parking meter costs on time if you like.

Doesn't seem smart to me, but then that's just me.
