My father, many years ago, took me over to the office parks on South Bee St., as well as Trumbull Dr. over in Greentree. Few cars or pedestrians there in the evening or on weekends.

My Driver's Ed teacher was a bit of a daredevil, I guess, because my first day behind the wheel he had me drive a few turns around the high school parking lot and then drive to Schenley Park. Taking the Parkway to get there. On the way back -- on my first day driving -- I had to do the two lane merge across traffic at Squirrel Hill. He may have taught his children to swim by throwing them into the pool as babies, but I'm not sure if that rumor was totally true.

I don't have a specific recommendation, but school and office complex parking lots after hours are usually good for just getting the feel. Cemeteries too. Then maybe a quiet residential area. How about the Summerset at Frick? It's a small area with a low speed limit. Lots of stop signs for practice.

Pittsburgh being the way it is, I would imagine the priority is to find an area you know well yourself, so you can help them navigate through weird intersections etc. But setting that aside for the moment, Summerset at Frick makes sense to me too; it's quiet and the roads are in good shape, and it's not far from you.

yeah go somewhere you know. I took my daughter to a parking lot to start then just a mile or two back to our house. Also goto the DMV afterhours and she can practice parking free.

I practiced driving up in Schenley Park early in the morning then around Squirrel Hill back street and main avenues.
