They built an indoor mall at a time when mall-based retail was trending toward outdoor developments like the Waterfront. No surprises here, just a poor investment decision made by the developer, compounded by mismanagement from day 1.

Interestingly, most of the detached retail and restaurant space seems to be doing okay.

They should have followed through with the indoor water park.

I only recently went to the mall for the first time and I was shocked and how many stores were empty plus many stores seemed to have some odd group set up at the front of the store with a folding table passing out pamphlets.

Walmart and the other outlying stores at Pittsburgh Mills are busy, but the mall has some real problems. The 1 floor set up makes it harder to walk.

I'll go to Macy's at Pgh Mills, but its into the store and back out into the parking lot, the mall is just a bit too much.

Besides, the closing of the Sears and Border's anchor stores got to hurt them

Maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I like the idea of shopping in person

Can't wait for it to become "luxury condos" as we don't have nearly enough of those yet either

As I've said before, Pittsburgh Mills was the answer to a question nobody answered. It's not in a very convenient location, and the only communities within a five-mile radius are tired old towns like New Kensington, Tarentum and Springdale.

With that said, I have nothing against shopping malls, personally, and I'm glad to see that all the rest of the malls in Allegheny County (except Century III Mall) are doing well.
