Seeing a show at Cleveland's Plain Dealer Pavilion
Was this the one that was kind of like the Station Square Amphitheater (before they got rid of it?) I saw Elvis Costello there.

None of these are indoors, but I much prefer an open-air setting for concerts. Seeing a show at Cleveland's Plain Dealer Pavilion really opened my eyes to how cool it could be to have an amphitheater right in the city.
I think it would be a great idea for summer shows, but what about shows in the coler months?

Now if you like an annual visit from Ratt, Poison, Warrant, or Quiet Riot, then Pittsburgh's your town for sure.

Well, on my visit this past weekend, I saw some of the venues along carson Street and throughout the area, and Pittsburgh's public radio scene seems to be good (although WFUV 90.7 in NYC is always going to be a far sight better than any of the others anywhere in the country...). I'd suggest checking out some of the local-area bands and support local music to help get a buzz about Pittsburgh going... that's how Minneapolis, Seattle & Austin did it.... you create interest in your city's music scene by supporting it...

The Decembrists were supposed to play here in November but cancelled due to illness. Check WYEP.org for concert listings. Yes, the concert scene could be better.

The Steelers have dropped the amphitheatre plan (which would've been 95% free programming anyways) and now plan on an enclosed music venue of 2000-3000 seats. They are working with a major national player in the concert hall business (can't remember the name). This should prove a huge boost to the city when it comes to attracting mid-tier national touring acts. Additionally, the new Penguins arena will help attract more top-tier acts. Mellon Arena has proved inadequate for some artists.

Additionally, some new players are joining the scene... the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead (not to be confused with Oakland's) has recently been booking a lot of popular mid-tier acts. Gravity seems to be a new place in Cheswick that is getting punk bands.

This guy spent a ton of money to have 10 bands during a three day concert. He had food vendors, $2 beer, free camping, and more than 100 beautiful acres of land to enjoy all of the shows. All he heard the entire time was that $40 for a three day show was too much money. Cheapskates, are the reason why people don't bother to book concerts in this area.

This is last years flyer and a list of bands he had. http://www.buffalohollow.net/documents/buffalo-hollow-2007.pdf (broken link)

Well, again as I'd mentioned earlier in the thread, I think the bands themselves have to work together in an alliance to create some buzz for the local music scene...

Regional and National touring acts will always come to Pittsburgh, just as they go to places like St. Louis & Memphis... as a larger mid-sized city, Pittsburgh's too big to snub...

But the TRUE mettle (not "Metal"..LOL!) of an area's music scene is always the LOCAL bands, who cultivate large followings and put on special shows to get their name out to the National booking agents.

In Dallas, no one knew who Pantera was, back when we were going to see them play at local city park bandshells for free on a Friday night.... but then, ebopugh people got word of them, that they generated interest in the California management agencies, and once Pantera took of, all of a sudden, Dallas became somewhat of a hotbed of musical activity...

Whoever the best local bands in Pittsburgh currently are, they need to start working together to CREATE buzz withIN the community about them, and word WILL filter out, and then the booking agents and management companies will see what Pittsburgh has to offer, and if its marketable, then your time will definitely come...

A few ideas which always seem to work (and I'm a former local-band concert promoter and lead vocalist...):

* 2-3 Annual Festivals on Private Property... camping allowed, and loose rules. 7-12 bands, max.... sell T-shirts of the event and make it a regular event each year.

* Frequent or annual "Battle of the Bands" contests, with winners receiving free (donated) time in a local recording studio and EP production.

* "Friday Night Live" free concerts in City Park areas, away from residential areas prone to noise complaints.

* Inclusion of Local Bands in anual festivals or parades. mardi Gras and St. Patty's Day are excellent times to showcase local talent.

* Get local rock radio stations to include more local bands or even a local music show on weekend nights, when the 18-25 crowd will be tuning in while partying... who really needs to hear more Blink 182 and Aerosmith classics, anyway?.....

Seriously - - - Pittsburgh CAN have a thriving music scene with relatively little work, but it has to be a (forgive the pun) "concerted" effort by everyone in the industry. The good thing, is that everyone in the industry already knows this and would likely be more than willing to go for it; they just need someone to cowboy up & take the lead role, to make it happen.....

Dallas has Steve Wynn..... Pittsburgh is waiting for theirs to show him or herself......

I agree with everythiing you say By~Tor, but I think Pittsburgh radio is a huge problem too. They all sound alike and not many promote local music. The beast stations are WRCT, WPTS and WYEP. The main commercial stations play very little local music (unless it's Donnie Iris and the Clarks.)

I think WYEP is our best shot out of the three stations mentioned ablove. Only if we had better radio....
