I agree with this as a general point, but I've also heard some rough stories from Pitt undergraduates about some pretty harsh bullying, and there's one district in particular that always seems to come up. I don't actually think it's truly about liberal vs. conservative, or about the color of their hair dye or anything like that. I think it's mostly about money, at least as far as I can tell from their stories.

Pretty much. As much as appreciate 8_years' very sensible suggestion that if people would just try to be less different they would not get bullied, that's not always a viable option. So, yes, we are taking the radical approach of loving and supporting our kids as they are, instead, and trying to find a less hate-filled and judgemental social climate. Honestly the majority of the adults I like were freaky kids, so it's not the kid's own qualities that I'm worried about.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we have a plan.
