Hi

I heard about Amish group living near Pittsburgh and people can visit their stores and farms.

Anyone has an address for it that I could find it on google map?

And any suggestions for us to visit them? any taboo? Is it a good season to visit them now?

Thank you!

^^There are some Amish in Lawrence County. Never heard of any stores, though. They're mostly farmers, I believe.

The Amish in Lawrence and Mercer counties are different than the ones in Lancaster County. In Lancaster County, it's more touristy and companies offer tours of Amish country. The Amish in Lawrence and Mercer are pretty private and would not appreciate strangers just dropping in. The mostly farm, but some own lumber mills, make furniture for sale, quilts, and sell produce in the summer. Try accessing the homepage for Volant, PA, which might provide information on dos and don'ts.

When I worked in Chautauqua NY they would sell there goods at flea markets, they are not a fan of visitors. I was invited to a man's woodworking shop for a visit. Even through I was invited I still felt like I was not welcome.

I believe this may be what you're looking for: Tour Amish Country

Go to the restaurant and get the hamloaf. I grew up in Lancaster County and I absolutely love it!!!

There are some great Amish restaurants in Lake County Ohio. But in general they are people living their lives and don't really want to be gawked at by the "English".

You could look into Tuscarawas and Holmes Counties in Ohio. Under 2 hours from Pittsburgh and lots of stuff for tourists.

There is a large population of Amish in Smicksburg, PA which is a relatively small travel from Pittsburgh.

Ten years spent in Amish country myself and I found them to be pleasant and polite but quite ..... distant, you might say. There may be a few families that run small roadside stands or sell food at the weekly flea market but that's about it. The idea of them having an actual storefront or having strangers in for a "sit-down" is pretty much unheard of, at least among the Amish I knew. It took me a long time to get to know a few well enough where we could talk easy with each other.

Now the Mennonites are a more open society as are those who call themselves Hutterites or Bruderhof but even they have limits.

Remember, these are just people, like us more or less, who go about their daily business, as we do. They aren't sights to be gawked at.

Try this, the New Meadow Run (Bruderhof) in Farmington has a regular Saturday dinner where those who are polite enough to ask can join them. Truly nice people and a pleasant experience.

There are some farms with greenhouses that sell seedlings in the Spring but don't go there unless they have the signs out.
