Homestead had a very influential black community. American actress Tamara Tunie was born and raised in homestead. My older neighbor grew up with her aunt's and uncles in a black enclave. Not sure of where it was exactly. It appeared to be semi rural based on her description. Tamara Tunie's grandfather had underground riverboat casino's as well as speak easies during prohibition. He is best known for his funeral homes and the Homestead Gray's negro league baseball team.

She may have been born in McKeesport. There is a large hospital there. She was definitely raised in Homestead before attending CMU.

I have a friend who lives in the new constructed homes behind the rest home, by the library. He absolutely loves living there. Great location, very quiet, and feels very safe. Those houses are a bargain for what you get. Think they originally sold for $135,000? Also, was doing research and one sold last year for around $180,000. A bargain in my mind. Are they making any newer homes like that anywhere else in Homestead?

This place I thought was pretty good. I didn't go very often and haven't been in years, but when I did go it was good. The owner is retiring as he is in his 70's, so it has nothing to do with anything other than that. If you want to go, it is open till Sept 17th.
