Just thought I'd chime in. I started lurking here recently after reading about Pitt's "subway tunnel" under construction. I thought, what are those buggers up to out there? Don't know that I ever woudl have looked at Pitt otherwise. What I've read sounds interesting and the pictures look beautiful. I'm planning a trip out there this summer to see what it's like. I feel like I should at least see my states' "other city." At any rate, I started to wonder whether I should be considering Pitt as a place to live. For what it's worth, I'll share what;s happening on the easter side of the state.
High gas prices have resulted in over a 10% increase in ridership on our regional rail despite large fare hikes last year (which has resulted in a 19.3% increase in revenue)...CTD is up 4.2% and revenue up 9.2%. Not only is this in spite of fare hikes, but a stagnant CBD job picture. that said, stagnant is a good start for us, after decades of contraction.
SEPTA

Rail ridership on the keystone line (NY-Phily-Lancaster-Harrisburg) is up over 20% again this year. Ridership at Harrisburg last year was over 460k as compared with 120k for Pitt (a city 8 times the size). what this shows is that people ARE increasingly interested in rail where it provides reasonable options. It seems Pitt is getting the shaft though
Despite Philadelphia-Harrisburg link, Amtrak not speeding to Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Business Times:

despite the fact it appears the state had been looking into 3 RT's under 5.5 hrs (not great, but useful)

From Mt Lebanon to Oakland using Public Transportation could easily take an hour and be very frustrating (sitting in the cold waiting for the trolley, and then sitting in the cold waiting for a bus).

I would pay for parking in Oakland. You will save 30 minutes each way.
