Yeah, everybody's dream is to move to an urban war zone.

i honestly thought this comment was funny.

but really, it is an exaggeration. i am not sure i'd agree its a "war zone" - not in Pittburgh, anyway, even though some cities in the US have had consistent enough violence that is embarrassingly akin to those of third world countried (LA, Baltimore...)

it has to stop. murder is bad enough, but the spinoff results - mistrust, fear, anger, etc.

props to the cops, though. in my view, i saw this coming 15 years ago. street incidents were becoming more and more outrageous, with no fear, it seems, of punishment, reprisal, or arrest. in the middle of an actual arrest now, they will still fight, argue, fight, struggle, as if they believe they can still get out of it, or are above the law. 'how dare you?', basically.

what is an arresting officer to do? they can only be pushed so far, yet are supposed to maintain perfect composure and make instant decisions that are for the safety of the perp. OK.

There`s a trio of crows that I feed nearly every day. Leave them alone!

I’d love to see cops walk off the job and watch to see how long it would be till folks were begging for them to come back. Personally, if I was a cop I’d do the absolute bare minimum and take my time getting to calls, which is what I’d wager many are doing these days as crime skyrockets due to them being hamstrung to do their jobs.

Hey, is it bad enough for HBO to do a series in Pittsburgh like The Wire? Some of your officials would go crazy trying to get a cameo like they did in Baltimore.

Have to wait for the new mayor to defund the police to really put it over the top.

Drugs Inc. “Pittsburgh Smack” was interesting, and the problems gotten worse since it aired.

Funny you should say that....my wife is from baltimore. She says that no city has ever scared her as much as mckeesport and duquesne (about 3 miles from here) so whats THAT say?

in all fairness, baltimore is geographically bigger, giving people room to spread out and develop stable neighborhoods based on a critical mass of high earners and large lot size....

mckees and duquesne could only be one industry towns. that went, and so did liveability, with the tax base. maybe mckeesport had a more diversified economy, but Charm City has a lot more advantages than either mckeesport or duquesne, size and legacy institutions being two of them.

baltimore downtown is just an uninviting, unwelcoming place - strange, since it has a lot of cool stuff....dundalk and little italy, too.

not a rhetorical question - how can Duquesne be improved? What would it take? A commitment to disciplined, structured public education, starting with grade 1 TODAY and seeing that level and each incoming year's students supported all the way to graduation? an influx of good manufacturing jobs? streetscape improvements to bud new, small business?
