Should remote learning be the norm?

Seems there are schools in our area that have to go remote due to threats all the time now. Maybe that should be the norm? PPS, can't seem to get buses going to get kids to school on top of it, so that would eliminate that problem. Maybe just have sports for kids to get together for socializing and the teaching can be done online. That would also cut teachers by 2/3rds at least as there isn't a reason to have so many teachers. That would cut costs by a lot and maybe lower taxes.

I know there are already cyber schools. Maybe that is the answer? Seems odd for me, but seeing schools going remote so often just seems like might as well make that the norm. What do you think?

Yep, since students can’t behave properly and are causing such huge problems, let them learn remotely, plus it’ll save a huge amount of money and taxes can be lowered. Win win.

Schools are going to be on lockdown, not remote.

Nah, only folks too scared to go out…besides, why be scared? If you’re vaccinated you have nothing to worry about along with masking up.

ive suggested on this board maybe prior to the pandemic that remote learning be the norm. it just makes sense. the amount of money spent on needless capital - HVAC, security, busing, etc. is old paradigm.

keeping school buildings in some form might make sense. maybe having the kids in 2-3 days a week, rotating groups of 10 or so. not only for covid concerns, but as a normal way of life.

i dont have all the answers. i am just asking how we can modernize modern public schooling with a vast reduction in waste and public money. there would be problems to work out, but some home / remote learning makes so much sense.

How many will show up? Will parents be okay with it? It is a 1/2 day anyway. Question still stands, maybe 3 days a week rotation of smarter kids and down the line. That way you can separate so the smart learners aren't held back as they so often are in big city schools.

It should have been done a decade ago. Public schools are the education equivalent of state stores. They're run for the benefit of union employees, not the public.

Yes remote learning should be the norm, or rather should eventually become the norm. It's pretty antiquated and also unfair to have the quality of your education be determined by the zip code in which you live. Obviously the technology to make this happen exists now and will only be improving hence. We should be doing everything we can to improve the quality of remote learning.

This is going to require that we ween parents off of using schools as a solution to their childcare issues. It's going to require a cultural paradigm shift for parents to see schools as something other than a babysitting/grading/athletic/activity factory, but to me it's a no-brainer: if the main duty of a school is to educate then let that be the focus. As it is now, a lot of the decisions that schools make defy pedagogical research in favor of other things. An easy example is look at the start times. All research points to schools starting no earlier than 10am. So why do they start so early? Simple: childcare and after school athletics.

If childcare issues can be solved and other outlets sought for athletics and activities are found leaving schools to focus on education (as is done in most of the countries with the best educational outcomes) then surely it makes sense to be able to access the best education from anywhere and at any time (which would of course be remotely.)
