The 2020 spike is obviously related to COVID. Looking at FRED data for other cities/counties, every one has a big spike for 2020.

The secondary spike around 2017 was not seen elsewhere, but I would hazard a guess it's opioid related. Other areas in the "opioid belt" (Ohio, West Virginia, etc.) also had a big jump in premature death around this period.

Eschaton/Moby - you've engaged on this Covid thread, so I ask you, what do you think of Erieguy's practice (seemingly more often in recent weeks, but the city data search function is kind of garbage) of referring to Covid vaccines as, "experimental shots?" Is that a "fair" characterization? Is it probably not the most accurate characterization, but still defensible? Or is it wholly inaccurate and potentially deleterious?

Large numbers of people are dying pointlessly but it's been a year since I've considered it avoidable. I don't understand why they decided to politicize the vaccine, instead of continuing to brag that Trump was president when it was created, but it's clearly succeeded.

population in allegheny county declined slightly from 1,280,000 in 2000 to 1,250,000 in 2020

according to health.pa.gov the number of deaths increased slightly in allegheny county from 15,072 in 2000 to 15,201 in 2020

and yet the premature death rate is way up - again, what's going on here?

More people are dying prematurely. Largely because of covid though I'm sure overdoses have played a role.

Premature Death

https://www.americashealthrankings.o...YPLL/state/ALL

"Risk factors for premature death include obesity, smoking and exposure to environmental hazards such as reduced air quality. Risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes and physical inactivity are also risk factors for premature death. Occupational hazards and certain behaviors, including not wearing seatbelts or motorcycle helmets and misusing drugs can increase the risk of unintentional injuries and premature death.

Social factors such as low education, poverty, racial segregation and inadequate social support also contribute to premature death. While not the direct cause of death, social factors can play a role in how and why a person dies."

I know several friends, young and healthy, who have had an out of nowhere heart attack within weeks of covid vaccines. Don't let the media or big pharma label you. CDC's own stats show many injuries and deaths due to vaccine. A dumb, stupid dangerous vaccine is simply that. For something with a 99% recovery rate. And to push it on children is unconscionable. I'm not afraid to say it. Think what you want though but do your research. Your body your choice. Govvie Wolf has had covid multiple times even after multiple vaccinations. But "it would have been worse without the vaccine", right? Please.

Also, most people are generally unhealthy. They think they can eat whatever, abuse their bodies, then run to the failed medical system for help when they're sick. No personal responsibilty. Nobody cooks anymore either. I'm guilty myself.
