Hey all.

The Census released detailed information for all 1,500 reported ancestries (not just race) for every census tract in the country in 2020. Some map guy on Twitter has already ported this into a national map, so you can see the plurality group in every tract.

Looking at the Pittsburgh region, the following can be seen.

1. Like most of the state, we're a heavily plurality German region as a whole. This stands in contrast to the bulk of the U.S., where plurality English ancestry is more common. You have to get down to the fringes of the metro (around Greene County) to find plurality English tracts.

2. The next most common plurality census tracts after German and African-American (which is in unsurprising areas, tracking closely with black reported ancestry) is Irish. Irish plurality tracts are kind of randomly distributed, but seem to skew a bit more lower-middle class overall, particularly in first/second ring suburbs.

3. There are three plurality-Chinese tracts now in the city, in North Oakland/Shadyside, but these are low plurality (10%-20%).

4. The only plurality-Italian tract left in the city is part of Bloomfield south of Liberty, though there are still a lot in the mid-Mon Valley around Donora/Monessen, along with parts of Jeanette and Aliquippa.

5. Polish Hill is still plurality Polish, just barely (20%)

6. There's that one weird tract in Scott Township which is nearly majority Indian (46.5%) around the Carriage Park Apartments.

One thing I want to note which made me quite happy is the mystery of what Asian populations have moved into the Greater West End has been solved here. Westwood is reported as nearly 6% Nepalese, and the tract that includes Oakwood/East Carnegie is 8% Uzbek. There's also a small Chinese population (6%) in central Sheraden.

Kind of surprised German. English/Scots were so heavy in PA, but I do think they seem to have gone to the Carolinas many decades ago. Pittsburgh was so heavily Scottish at the beginning. Very different today of course.

Sort of interesting, but most today don't really hold on to their ancestry much as so many have been here for many generations so we are "Americans". We seem to be just separated by race now and even that is getting a bit dated as Asians and Latinos are blending I think.

"White ethnic" doesn't mean much of anything any longer, unless you're in one of the few places that continued to get European immigration over the past few decades, like NYC and Chicago.

Yeah, I think Asians and Latinos may get lumped in at some point. Odd how we keep separation.
