I am thinking of moving to Pittsburgh when I retire. Can you give me recommendations as to what neighborhoods I should be looking at? I am mid sixties and am looking for safety, affordability and relatively close to medical care if I should need it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to specify a budget. The big boy hospitals are around Oakland/Aspinwall/Shadyside/Northside. There are a lot of good ones our further however as we do have good medical.

You buying? Renting? Price/monthly?

Define affordable to be able to narrow it down.

city or suburb?

overall safety isn't too much of a concern in our region. Random violent crime is a rarity. Within the city you'll deal with more city type crime like stolen packages or someone going through your car if left unlocked, but its pretty rare for someone to be attacked or mugged at random.

Unfortunately if you are buying our taxes are outrageous. I would look outside the county. I live in bridgeville now that I retired. The property taxes are more reasonable here for being in allegheny county.

ANYTHING in the region is close to medical care. You cannot ride by even a shopping plaza without some UPMC, AHN or Excela backed location being in it.

however the other 2 edges of the sword, ANY neighborhood in the pittsburgh area - if that all important 152xx zipcode is all that important - that is affordable, is not safe. and vicey versy

As much as I wanted to move back here after my 35 year diaspora, I naively thot that things had changed. they didnt, they got worse. PA is a good place to retire to. Pittsburgh is not. (which is why I kept my place up north: fallback options in case I dont find somewhere else when I pull all the plugs.)

Keeping people sick is profitable, I've always said.

Anyway, I'd pick anywhere in Washington County personally. If you want "night life" moving a little closer to downtown Pittsburgh. I'd go with Collier Township, Carnegie, Oakdale ..

well, a person doesnt HAVE to be 'kept sick'. we collectively know what is good for the body, what is not, how to avoid health issues, how to minimize risk of sickness, etc.

good call: Collier and Carnegie. i think the borough of Carnegie is underrated, and might suit you well, KeithK, if you want some semblance of urban living. they have a good little downtown strip there.
carnegie borough, and the area around it (including Collier Township) i do not believe have any crime to be concerned of...for now, anyway.

Why isn’t Pittsburgh good to retire to vs PA in general?

PA in general is friendly to your retiree pocketbook and as pointed out, there are medical institutions everywhere - any county.

BUT

pitt is lousy for the elderly who need to get around - hills traffic, cant walk anywhere unless you are capable of great bursts of speed, lousy sr citizen transpo, lousy public transpo, lousy housing types for those with creaky knees, no quiet places, bad weather (lack of sun), lack of outdoor access for those types, sr tennis, bocce, golf, fishing, etc - everything a sr wants in this state will be in the chesapeake drain area.

and the trend has caught on, as the retirement homes are becoming under generally 5 corporate umbrellas nationwide, in THIS area, they are closing about 2.5:1, meaning 2.5 close to 1 being built a) boomers are dying and the boomiest boomers are gone and b) they are dying in the other states they moved to.

You should get a condo in North Oakland or Shadyside. A flat area, close to hospitals, restaurants, museums, libraries, and stores. Some of the buildings even have gardens on the roof.
