I was all excited to see how much snow fell overnight, and at my house there was nothing. Got to work, and there was about a half inch on the ground in Oakland (and why is Forbes Ave seemingly never salted?)

Just like a little kid I was bummed not to see the snow blowing around outside first thing this morning. Figure if it's going to be cold and windy might as well have some snow. As is so typical of local news the first threat of snow is over blown and seriously over sensationalized as an event.

Here is a short true story of my first year being a weather forecaster at a station up in Erie about 8 years ago. I had been working at this station since August and part of the reason to work in Erie was to 'tackle' the great Lake Erie snow machine.

Well our first lake effect snow event looked dead on to be a real dumping. All the forecasters were saying easily 8-12 inches will fall overnight. Me being the new kid on the block decided to make sure everyone knows what 8-12 inches of snow means to the everyday driver and buisness owner in Erie County.

Boldly I explained why you should not venture outside later tonight and certainly tomorow because mother natue will tear you apart then very quickly bury your remains under fresh powder. So I complete my forecast that night and leave the station and head down the street to the bar to have night cap.

As I'm easing into the night up at the bar I recieve a huge slap on the back by some complete stranger.
Stranger no more as mister fresh weather boy just gotta lesson in two things. The owner of the bar informed right there that I had destroyed his buisness for the night and the next day by me over hyping the forecast of snow and that I should never have given my thought on how those watching should live their lives. It was a great lesson that so many media types should go through and I'll never forget that.

Weather is fun to talk about and it seems we have a lot of weather related topics on here from time to time. How about a thread dedicated towards reporting weather at your location in and around the Pittsburgh region..? We can see if it stay's 'fresh' without having numerous threads of the same thing..
I'll start it above...

We got it; maybe only 2 inches maybe 3 in LV but not bad for lake effect.
