I'll be moving from NYC to Pittsburgh and was wondering what the fare situation there is? in NYC we are about to get hit with a small fare hike, followed by another potential hike down the road. we are going from $2.00 to $2.25, they were originally going to raise it to $2.50 and do severe service cuts.

I rarely ride the T, but I believe it is still free downtown. At least I haven't heard anything different. The fairs are based on zones...zone 1, 2, or 3. Where will you be living? Also, rush hr prices are higher. Yes, PAT sucks just as bad as MTA. However, at least our bridges and tunnels are free.

The downtown zone is free for buses and the T. Zone 1 fares are $2 (seven-mile radius from downtown), and transfers are 50 cents and good for three hours, even if it's for your ride back home. Rush hour prices are higher on the T only, not the buses. Buy ten-trip zone tickets and weekly and monthly passes at a discount. I don't know what the zone 2 and 3 fares are since I never use those.

According to the schedule I have on my desk, the zone 2 fare is $2.60 and zone 3's is $3.25. It also lists a "Zone 2B" which is also $3.25 from downtown or zone 1.

The OP should also be aware that there is only a "train" from the south hills into downtown. The rest of the public transportation is provided by buses.

For what? My bus fare doesn't change throughout the day. It's always the same price.

For the "T" and only on cash fares. If you use the tickets or passes and you don't pay any extra.

Also be aware that there are three busways that really expedite travel to the east, south, and southwest. They are dedicated highways for buses only with stations that bypass clogged streets. Many bus routes feed into the stations, and there are also routes that make specific station stops in the neighborhoods. It's the same principle as rail, only with buses and it's really fast.

I'll be living downtown in The Century Building, and mostly everything I would need access to would be easily reached on foot, but once I get familiar with the area and decide I want to go exploring...

The subway only has three stops downtown. It's free within the immediate downtown area. (You can walk from one side of downtown to the other in 10 minutes or less) I believe there is a fee to take it across the river to Station Square. You can easily walk to North Side. Everywhere else requires a bus. Keep in mind, this isn't a taxi city. If you go to South Side or Oakland for bar hopping, you won't be able to just walk outside and hail a taxi. You'll have to call, and there is no guarantee what the taxi will arrive. Plan to learn the bus routes to those areas so you have options.
