My boyfriend and I are moving to Pittsburgh in the fall and would really like to get involved with some fun and fulfilling volunteer opportunities and/or activist groups. We are in our mid-twenties, are very liberal, and will be living in Squirrel Hill area with lots of access to buses but, at least initially, without a car. We are interested in all sorts of issues including, but not limited to, poverty, the environment, womens issues/feminism, disability, education, and issues relating to race and ethnicity. Most of all, however, we are looking for a functional and enjoyable group or organization to join where we can meet new folks while doing some good. Thanks so much for your help!

As a start, check out www.pittsburghcares.org. It's an organization where you can sign up for a wide variety of volunteer activities, with no long-term commitment.

If you're interested in seeking leadership in such organizations, Duquesne University's Boards by Design is a great program that offers training in nonprofit leadership and helps place you on nonprofit boards. Nonprofit Leadership Institute Home - Duquesne University (http://www.sites.duq.edu/nli/ - broken link) I am currently going through the program and they assisted me in getting placed on a great board.

GPLC

Instead of doing "activism" at the Merton Center why not solve one of the roots of the problem

GPLC, Very good choice. I know several adults who can neither read or write, kinda makes ya wonder how some of them made it through school. Say's alot for our public school system.
