Hello!
Can anyone tell me if there are any good stores that carry a large selection of live herbs in Pittsburgh? Most chain-store garden centers do not have what I am looking for.

I'm specifically looking for Patchouli plant and lavender, if it helps

Thanks!

I'm not local to you, but it sounds like it's time for the old fashioned paper Yellow Pages. Look under nurseries. If you do it on the internet you're going end up with lots of places that AREN'T local -- just paying to show up under searches.

And call around. Lavendar won't be the problem, unless you are looking for a specific variety, but I suspect patchouli will be...

If you're willing to try growing from seed, Johnny's seeds is a great place to look.... http://www.johnnyseeds.com/default.a...FRFMagodwiouBA

I found this site which may help in your search...

The scoop on 'Blossom Farm Perennials & Herbs'

Good luck!

Garden Dreams in wilkinsburg has a good selection of herbs. I know they have several kinds of lavender. I'm not sure if they have patchouli - I don't think they do though. http://www.mygardendreams.com

There is also a giant garden center on route 8, in Etna maybe? It's on the left if you're going north on 8, maybe 10-15 minutes from the river. They have a great selection of herbs and vegetables.

Other than that, I second what Tallysmom said - look up nurseries and call around.

This is a little off topic -- went to a bakery last year and had a Russian Tea Cake -- also known a Sandies -- butter cookie with ground nuts and coated in powdered sugar? These had a magnificent flavor, it was cool and tangy and floral, and I let the cooie melt in my mouth....

I asked what the secret ingredient was -- lavendar extract.

thank you so much! I will check both of those places, and the yellow pages as well. I've made those cookies before, but never with lavender extract- sounds amazing! I also know someone who brews lavender mead- never tried it, but it's supposedly wonderful!
