Any suggestions? I'm liking some of the places I've seen on the Slopes. It seems there are a fair amount of young people without the rowdiness you'd get in the Flats but the whole commute thing is still an issue.

I would recommend heading down the hill and making left on Carson Street and either:

A) Making a left on the Smithfield Street Bridge and catch the Fort Pitt Bridge from Fort Pitt Blvd

B) Take Carson Street to the West End, and catch the Parkway West

In my experience Arlington Avenue around the Liberty Bridge can get kind of congested during the afternoon rush.

I have tried this several different ways (used to live on the Slopes). Take Pius St. down into the Flats, then take some side streets west to McArdle Roadway. Take that up and over Mt. Washingtown, back down to Rt 51 then take that to the Parkway.

If you're closer to Arlington, I'd cut through Mt. Oliver/Knoxville/McKinly Park via Brownsville/Bausman/Rt 51. If you're closer to the bottom of the hill I'd probably take jeffm's route. No offense to jmantra, but definitely don't go all the way to the West End Circle, it's a longer distance and absolutely awful during rush hour. Same for Smithfield to Fort Pitt, bad idea at 4 PM. Both sides of the Liberty tubes are going to get congested, but the Arlington side is worse because of the weird slope it's on. Might get stuck for a couple lights there. The Rt 51 side is a pretty long light, but generally everyone gets through in one go. Neither of these will compare to the West End or Downtown traffic though.

Have you tried going on Warrington Ave to Route 51?

The OP didn't specify which rush hour, AM or PM, would be the one going "to" the Parkway West. That could make a difference, and would be useful to know...

My bad. I'd probably be leaving my place at 6:30 AM (work starts at 7:30).

You might not even need to be on the Parkway West. Where are you trying to commute specifically?
