Banners, billboards to tell the story of Pittsburgh's change during G-20 summit

SERIOUSLY Pittsburgh?! This is the best we can do? This is embarassing. Every single design cliche, bad font and terrible piece of clipart has been used in this stuff. I can't believe they couldn't outsource these designs to any one of Pittsburgh's great design firms or agencies. These make us look like a joke! Notice in the orange sign in the background the binary code (10010110111010110100101) running across it! LOL!!!!

They are basically trying to negate all the bad stereotypes of Pittsburgh, and I agree that approach didn't work out so well.

Here's the email address I pulled from the article. bpfister@pittsburghg20.org Sounds like it was an internal job by the county's design department.

Seriously though....and "we feel your envy"? Really? What's up with that tone? Way way off.

According to the article, the signage was "designed by a collaboration of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, the county's graphics department and city officials." Sounds like a too-many-cooks situation to me.

That said, looking through the various images available here:

https://www.pittsburghg20.org/Articles/081209.aspx#

I think the basic "welcome" signs of various sorts are OK (not inspired, perhaps, but not embarrassing either). It is really just the three storefront window displays that strike me as horribly cheesy, and apparently the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership is responsible for those. Which is disappointing--I like a lot of what they have been doing otherwise.

In looking at them on the website, there's nothing innovative or anything that pops out in these banners. They should have had a real design firm do this - the city is loaded with them. The PDP banners are way too busy and it looks like clip art. The robot looks like it's from the 50s. Too bad.

Absolutely agree. My guess is that the basic welcome signs got dumbed down to the least common denominator by the "collaborative" process described in the PG article, and meanwhile the PDP ones are, to be brutally honest, amateurish. I would also agree a real design firm could likely have avoided both sides of this coin.

Default Oh come on -- It's a burgh thing... hey Luke give them a hawt dwag n that...

What does everyone expect. There is no leadership or creativity at city hall or at the county head. If this task is to be done by local government then you will have at best a so so product. The Alleg Conf has been a organization in decline for years. Paul Mellon would be spinning in his grave if he knew how little they are responsible for these days as economic productivity goes. The downtown partnership is just a puppet for the rest. The most creative minds in Pittsburgh are those found in the private sector. Think Luke and co would dish out any of the work to say Pop City or any of the good advertsing houses in the burgh...? NO WAY.... Oh by the way... Kevin Acklin... you the man...
