I'm thinking of building a gazebo or pergola in my backyard here in Brookline, but am not sure if I need a permit first. It will be about 8 feet in diameter and 8 feet tall, with the posts sunk into the ground at least a few feet. No electricity or plumbing...just wood - it won't be a fully enclosed structure, and it will have mostly latticework on the sides rather than solid walls to encourage the growth of climbing plants over it.

I plan to take a look at the City code, but if anyone has any experience with from past projects any input would be appreciated!

I think you need a permit for a gazebo.

Here's what doesn't require a permit:

BBI

Here's a pdf that shows a permit was issued for a gazebo:

I think the height of a gazebo and the fact it has a roof matters. Also, it's clear that gardening sheds need permits too.
