There has always been a dribble of movies filmed in Pittsburgh, often with Pittsburgh playing the role of some other city. But it has taken off recently, in part as a result of a tax credit scheme, and just because some people have really invested in bringing films here.

Try Wonder Boys, if you haven't seen it. Yeah, same author (he's from here, he sets the books here). Filmed here and it was kinda fun, we liked it. I haven't seen Mysteries so can't compare, though.

LOL I only saw it recently with the Netflix subscription. Well, several months ago, that's recently given when it came out. But seriously, VHS? It's not THAT old.

PS I haven't noticed any filming in downtown, but then I arrive into and stay in only one corner at least in the morning. Sometimes out and about a bit at lunch, but I don't typically get up near Grant if that's where it was.

oh and i want to see mysteries of pittsburgh cause i know tons of people who were extras in the "punk club" scene, but it sounds so horrendous...

i wasn't that into the book and the movie sounds even worse. i heard they completely excised the gayness from what was basically a gay coming of age novel.

They kept in a bit of the gayness, but they cut out a main character while the character Sienna Miller played, who was barely important in the book was given a larger role.

I watched the little "Making of" feature of MoP, and the director kept talking about how much he loved the book, and Michael Chabon even gave it his thumbs up, but it was such a hatchet job. I know that movies have to be done differently than books, but it's okay if the spirit and tone are still there. MoP was a boring mess.

Earlier this week, I watched a Sarah Jessica Parker movie that was filmed in Pittsburgh AND the storyline was Pittsburgh too. It was weird because some of the scenes were set in the wrong place. For instance, she was a doctor at Allegheny General Hospital. While many of the scenes were actually filmed in Allegheny General Hospital, there was one scene where she got out of the car to go into the hospital and it was filmed in a different part of town entirely. The large AGH sign was at the edge of the sidewalk but the surrounding neighborhood wasn't right. The scene was filmed downtown as if AGH was literally in the heart of downtown, not in North Side across from a park.
