Hey everyone!

My husband was born and raised in the 'Burgh, and we lived there for about 6 months into our engagement (we met while we were both living in NYC). We decided (although it turned out to be a very poor decision) to move to my hometown of Knoxville, TN, and are now seriously considering a move back north. We need somewhere that isn't quite as radically right-wing, and Pittsburgh seems to be a nice, healthy, middle of the road place when it comes to politics. We also need GOOD public schools and a more general open-minded place.

My question is this... I am currently enrolled in a community college in Tennessee for nursing. What are the nursing programs like in and around Pittsburgh? I know Pitt's program is phenomenal, but I was looking there more for my Master's degree when I am ready, as I don't think they'll accept me for the Bachelor's program quite yet.

Our community college has a nursing program that transfers into California University's BSN program.

CCAC/CUP Nursing Program | Community College of Allegheny County

There are many other nursing programs. I just thought I'd quickly share this route since you're already in community college now.

If you are close to finished, you might consider doing so in Tenn, then make the move. It may make your life a lot easier. Nursing courses sometimes don't transfer easily. At a minimum, I would recommend talking to someone in the program Hopes suggested.

I think I would agree with this. My mother and sister are nurses, and there are sure a lot of solid prerequisite classes to complete. Transferring mid-program is usually a shot in the foot (i.e. inefficient). Once you get your ASN or BSN, you will be employable, and might be in a better situation to move. Assuming, of course, you can tolerate your current situation for a couple more years.

Definitely call CCAC like Katiana suggested. It's possible that CCAC might accept most of your credits. If you've only recently started nursing school in TN, you might be better off moving now if you dont' want to wait three or four years to move to Pittsburgh. I wouldn't let the loss of a few credits keep me from moving somewhere. However, I would definitely wait if you're almost done or CCAC doesnt' accept most of your credits. You won't know what transfers until you check into it.

Good point.

Thanks!

I actually just started my pre-reqs. No actual nursing courses yet, and the classes I have taken are pretty much the same all around the board... don't think I'd have trouble transferring. I'll give them a call next week after the holiday. I'll actually be in Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving. Can't wait!

Also, talk with your advisor at your present school.
