My fiance and I are potentially moving to pittsburgh next year. Since I work late nights i would like to find a place where she would be safe at home alone. Also, I hear you have a few places w/ large jewish populations and grocery stores w/ kosher food and the kosher food is imporntant to her. My fiance is easily frightened so the nicer the beter. What would neighborhoods would you recommend i search in?

Thanks,

Haha.

You just described Squirrel Hill.

That is all.

Yep, if you want a combination of a relatively large Jewish population and among the lowest crime rates in the City, Squirrel Hill is the obvious choice. Some other nearby neighborhoods (Point Breeze, Regent Square, Swisshelm Park, and Greenfield) also have very low crime rates and easy access to Squirrel Hill.

It should be noted those other neighborhoods are also cheaper.

Squirrel Hill has everything you're looking for. It's a great area: kosher food stores, many synagogues, low crime, mix of people, great park, library, restaurants, local stores, and two movie theaters. Solid brick houses, lots of apartments, great public transportation, and a great walking neighborhood.

Indeed. In fact that is why I thought it was worth mentioning them, since while Squirrel Hill might be the best fit otherwise, these are viable options if the original poster finds that Squirrel Hill is a little pricey for their budget.

Maybe She should learn how to use a weapon (and carry it). Safety is up to the individual. I go wherever I want. If someone wants to mess with me then they do it at their own risk. What do you say to that?

Pittsburgh in general is a super safe area. If your fiance is particularly worried, you might want to live in a neighborhood with more families (as opposed to students who tend to keep to themselves). Areas where people watch out for each other are generally safer than areas where they don't.
Squirrel Hill is a very nice safe place to live as are all of the other neighborhoods mentioned.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mt. Lebanon also, while it isn't as strongly Jewish as Squirrel Hill, there are several synagogues in the South Hills area and I'm sure there are kosher places likewise and it is also a walkable neighborhood.
