Carpatho-Rusyn Society
Carpatho-Rusyns are a different ethnic group mostly in Slovakia, Serbia, and Ukraine

Thanks for the clarification - I looked at one of their newsletters, on their website, and thought that the language looked more like Ukrainian - at least I noticed some letters that are not in the Russian alphabet.

And thanks, Pittchick, for the website info - they have a bunch of radio programs archived that I'm going to check out (for the choral music!)

I was thinking the same thing. I thought Pittsburgh has a decent sized Ukrainian community actually.....

From what I know, there are many, many Ukrainians in both Pennsylvania and in upstate New York.

It's funny that you mention Polish Hill, because while I think there are easily still ethnic Polish there, the neighborhood has "normalized" like many of the other neighborhoods mentioned because of the lack of continued European immigration into Pittsburgh. The "hipster" population in Polish Hill could be more significant than the actual Polish population.

I will vouch for there being some Slovak population in Greenfield as during one bus ride I was on, two people boarded , sat in front of me and were clearly talking an Eastern European language of some sort.

And from Google Maps, it appears to be a couple of doors down from a store called "Ethnic Foods."

Hmmm. Could they be more specific?

LOL, that's Western PA for ya. I can still remember my mom saying when she was growing up in the Latrobe area and her parents would refer to Italians in the area as "ethnics". There seemed to be a significant Slovak population in and around Latrobe I guess, so why not Greenfield? Andy Warhol's birth name was Warhola. His family lived in South Oakland and they went to the large Polish church located at "The Run" section of Greenfield.
