I don't want cheapies from Men's Warehouse nor do I want $5,000 Italian bespoke status symbols. I was thinking of $750-$1,000 per suit. Good quality with a knowledgable tailor. Yada yada yada.

Any advice or suggestions?

If there is still a Herman's Stylegate around like in Shadyside I would check them out. I used to buy all my suits from their original store. High quality at a good price, great tailor, always got compliments., not the usual but very in and tasteful. The owner would ask what you want it for and he'd set you up with matching shirts, ties, etc. I believe his son took over and he would warn me about going there (Shadyside) saying I wouldn't like the prices or service. I don't know. If I needed a suit today it's the first place I'd checkout.

This article runs down some places downtown, which I think all still exist (article is from 6 months ago, not too long). But guessing at least some are higher than what you're looking for. In addition to the story text, there's a list on the left:

When it comes to clothing, Downtown is a man's world - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

I don't know if it will help. I was just remembering how Heinz Healey's moved over to 5th Avenue, where I've walked by it many times (used to be in Station Square), and Larriomor's moved down this way from their old space near Grant. These stores, I suspect, may be beyond the range you're looking for, but I'm not sure. Personal experiences, if there are any others, will be able to help you narrow it down. And I'm not any help there. I don't wear suits.

I've bought a couple suits at Larrimors over the years. They're expensive, but they have a twice yearly sale where you can get a Hickey-Freeman suit for around $1,000. I have to say that the quality and service is excellent down there. I've had two of the suits since 1995 and they're still holding up! I even had a tear on a seam on one of them and they fixed it at no charge.

Thanks for the advice. I will check some of these places out.

Do you guys have any opinions on Brooks Brothers? I see I can get two of their suits for $1498 or something. The Fitzgeralds look nice. Is B.B. still a respectable brand?

Heh, since you brought up Brooks Brothers I have to give you this tidbit from years ago. For some reason I never forget this story from a guy I worked with when I first moved here. He had gone to Brooks Brothers for some reason, I guess because everyone knows that brand, and got a dress shirt or two. But apparently (this part is now kinda lost to memory) they were not exactly the style he wanted or something. So (same trip, still carrying the Brooks Brothers stuff) he went down the street to Saks. That was better.

In other words, in the early 90s, for those of us in our, well, it was early 20s then, Brooks Brothers was seen as a stuffy old man's store. I don't think that image has changed that much, has it? I don't really know. Sorry, I know I'm not helping really, just still chuckle at the thought of the saleslady at Saks trying to protect the image of this 22 year old kid, making sure to hide the Brooks bag inside one from Saks. In Pittsburgh in the 90s, no less.

You can't go wrong with Brooks Brothers, IMHO. Outside of their downtown store, there are very nice outlet stores in Grove City, and the new Tanger outlet mall near the Meadows in Washington County.
Also, Jos. A. Bank makes some nice suits in their more expensive lines.

Check out Saks and Nordstrom, too, if you want good tailoring and service to go along with your purchase.

I had a very good experience with the Joseph A. Bank Downtown. Admittedly, I am only 22 with little experience with searching for suits, but with the help of my father and the experienced salesmen there, it felt like an EXCEPTIONAL experience.
