The BP Disaster Marks the End of the Age of Arrogance About the Environment ... Can We Change?
This spill will mark the time we started to learn about ecocide; a turning point in our realization that our industrial, carbon-dependent way of life cannot last.
I don;t see it; If you look at what people will pay then survaival in the modern ages means that people will not pay the cost. The public isn;t willing to pay for maximum safety requirements. I fully expect for this to be like the nuclear electric scare that caused our situation now compared to other nations like Farnce. Or the save the minnow that prevented the floodgatesplan in new orleans in the 60's.We are a reactive society and not pro-active.The ony way to get that is the favorite of making people believe that someone else is going to pay the cost by a shell game.;but eventaully they reralise they have been duped and the pendulum swings back.In the end we are already headed for a importation of crude in ver more mounts for deacdes to come;becaus e we don;t ahve that much. All it really takes IMO is looking at what is being planned for supplying or refienries. More from canda in the way of pipelines capable of carrying sands tars ;more offhaor unload terinolas and a concentration of refrining capactiy in certain areas that can take the polace of amny refieries thru out the nation. Lower reficing cost especailly in numbers of employees. I know a refinery that is being doubled in output that takes 2000 employees that will increase by 400 to double output.I see many older refieries not situated in the right palce being shutdown in the near future. The real probelms will come as such countries as inida and china keep increasing their enregy needs by large per centages. I don't think many even knew of the well spill on the mexican coast yaars ago that took months to drill a relief wellntil ti happened in our bakyard. We will likely over react then over react again when the consequences of doing so are realized.
