So....if you're going to be a supreme court justice, you are perma banned from watching any current movies, reading any current books and anything like that? Wow. It was a 40 second clip. I think many of you need to un-wad your panties.

And there are numerous other justices that have had no judicial experience. Go ahead, look it up.

But they at least have 12 years or more experience in practicing law! Renquist for example. Kagan?? Nothing. But now she's gonna be a Justice.

Yeah, I agree that it was a frivolous waste of time, but so are many of the questions from right-wing Senators who are clearly just putting on a show for their base voters back home. These judicial nominee hearings are mostly about theatrics rather than substance. I wish they'd do away with them entirely.

With that said, I think the exchange between Klobuchar and Kagan actually served to humanize Kagan even more. There's no doubt in my mind that she performed well during the hearings in terms of her public image.

What was the context of this exchange? Was it during the opening moments of the confirmation hearings, somewhere in the middle during a break, or at the end?

I've had meetings of all sorts and it is not unusual to ask questions of each other that had nothing to with the purpose of the meeting at hand - it served as an opportunity to loosen everyone up. Example: "How was the traffic into downtown?" or "How is the family?"

Both were completely unrelated to the project we were working on but I find that questions like that are harmless.
