The US is setting records each month with the number of people on food stamps.
The US is setting records each year with the number of people in poverty.
The US seems to be going for a record number of 0's in our debt.
The average length of unemployment hit a US record since it first starting recording the numbers in 1948.

That is what Congress has directly and indirectly been responsible for.

Wish I had seen this thread sooner.

I'm going to make some general points, about Democratic promises and accomplishments, and about Republicans.

Democrats promised change. They were voted in for that reason. What change was that? Was it a change away from Democratic policies?

Of course not. There is no reason to list every single crime of the Bush/Cheney administration one more time, because you all know the story. It was a horrible mess of economic destruction 8 years in the making. It was a fear campaign waged on us by our government, to carve the word "TERRORISM" into our eyes. Etc. We wanted a change from the Republican policies, so we did what voters always do: We held our noses and went with the lesser of two evils.

Consider the American people in '08 as an employer, and the candidates and their respective parties as two potential employees. The first one (the Republicans) had a proven track record of escalating debt, uncontrollable aggressiveness toward others, a myopic and bigoted view of the world, and an abysmally low approval rating. The second one had little track record, but was well-spoken, and represented a party (Democrats) that had run a balanced budget in the past, avoided endless war, made an effort to take care of the people, and generally maintained a sound government.

So we rolled the dice. Go with the ghouls you've had for the past 8 years? Or the new guy and his hopeful fellows who promise change? Bear in mind, whenever you poke fun at the "Change" slogan, who exactly it was that the American people wanted a change from.

Has Obama delivered on promises? For progressives, liberals, and Democrats, the answer is mostly a no. A few trinkets here and there. Nothing to write home about. It doesn't matter what Fox News and the conservatives say, because they are attacking him for the wrong things. It's not that he's too "Leftist" or "Socialist" or "Communist," it's that all of his left-wing people-centric policies never materialized. We didn't care what happened to wall-street, the bankers, the insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, etc. Take care of the people! It didn't happen, because Obama is a tiny step to the left of Bush. In many respects, he is further right than Bush.

The biggest change, if I had to name one, is that the Obama administration has dialed down the fear and panic campaign. It's an absence of a thing, not really an 'accomplishment,' but the stress that the Republicans had us under for 8 years was truly overwhelming. Hope is a bit cheesy, but it's a welcome change from: "Crap your pants! We could be atttacckked! Give more money to defense contractors!!! Fear for your lives!!"

All of the things conservatives are attacking Obama over (and I do mean all of them), are bogus. That's a big claim, but I say this because there was a reason Obama brought us hope. It wasn't because we just wanted a slightly different flavor of icecream, a left-leaning version of Bush. He was supposed to change the corrupt system, or give it his best shot. He was supposed to give us progress that would have been measured by troops brought home, savings accounts protected from wall-street, lives made better through real HCR, and a more-transparent capitol.

Coming back to the topic of this thread, and the tie-in with a coming election: Let us not forget why we wanted change. Let us not forget why we all desired so badly to believe that Obama would change things. And let us remember what will happen if the Republicans regain control of the house, and in 2012, the oval office. They do not hide their intentions. Republicans want things exactly as they had them under Bush. Ask your Republican leaders, and they will tell you so. If anything, the emergence of the Tea Party and the radical candidates they field is a sign that if Republicans get their hands on power, the next president will be Bush writ extreme.

No, there is no huge list of Democratic accomplishments, only a less-virulent version of government corruption and corporate greed. Democrats are satisfied to throw the people a sop once in a while to keep them complacent. Republicans make no such concessions.

Under the Republicans, all wealth must flow directly upward from those who actually work for it, never to be taxed, sequestered at the top for those who already have it. We must abide every hawk with a war to sell. And the executive branch has absolute authority over every other branch, every citizen, and every dollar in times of war. Conveniently, the war on terror is a never-ending war, so the executive has absolute authority forever.

I urge my fellow libs, dems, and progs to hold their noses, close their eyes, and vote for the lesser of two evils this election. If nothing else, it's a reprieve for our Constitution until we can mount a strong presidential candidate in 2012 who will give good change to an ailing nation.

  1. Democrats passed the first increase in the minimum wage in a decade.
  2. Democrats passed the Wounded Warrior Bill, improving military health care and providing a 3.5% pay raise to our troops.
  3. Democrats passed a bill to better regulate the student loan industry.
  4. Democrats passed Homeland Security funding to address border and transit vulnerabilities.
  5. Democrats passed legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations.
  6. Democrats passed the Stimulus bill that included $288,000,000 in tax cuts, making it one of the largest tax cuts in history.
  7. Democrats passed the largest land conservation law in nearly two decades.
  8. Democrats passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
  9. Democrats passed the Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act, which provided coverage to 4 million previously uninsured children.
  10. Democrats passed the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act.
  11. Democrats passed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure (CARD) Act to protect Americans from unfair and deceptive credit card practices.
  12. Democrats passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
  13. Democrats passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, ending government bailouts of the financial sector.

"There seems to be little to endear citizens to their legislature or to the president trying to influence it. It's too bad, because even with the wrench thrown in by Republican Scott Brown's election in Massachusetts, this Democratic Congress is on a path to become one of the most productive since the Great Society 89th Congress in 1965-66, and Obama already has the most legislative success of any modern president -- and that includes Ronald Reagan and Lyndon Johnson. The deep dysfunction of our politics may have produced public disdain, but it has also delivered record accomplishment."

A very productive Congress, despite what the approval ratings say - washingtonpost.com

And the above is hardly an exhaustive list, but it's late on Saturday night and there are better things I'd rather be doing than knocking down rightwingers' false arguments about the lack of Democratic accomplishments.

using your logic, I could say that the iraq war was a major accomplishment. I think the OP wanted to know what good they've done.

That's funny, I don't see where the OP made any qualifications, such as, "and I must agree with each and every one of them for them to qualify." Let me double check. . .

The dems took control of our congress more then 3 years ago and I would like to see a list of any major accomplishments they have under their belt since then.

What have they done for the typical American in the last years?

1.
2.
3.

You would think the list would be endless since they have had control for the last 3+ years and TOTAL control for the last 21 months of the entire country.

They promised us a lot of things and I am waiting for the huge list of accomplishments.

What! no accomplishments of the dem party since 2007 that you can be proud of.

I am sure one dem can think of at least one major accomplishment in 3+ years they have had total control of congress.

1.
2.
3.
4.
and so on.

Fill in blanks with those accomplishments.
Nope, no such qualifications, just an enumerated list of major accomplishments we can be proud of. I happen to think every one of the major accomplishments I listed have done something good for this nation. That's what I was asked to provide and I provided it. You don't get to move the goalposts now.

I happen to think that every one of those "accomplishments" are pathetic.

You see what doing that did right? It cost us more jobs. Not a smart move at all. The dems have lost 9 million jobs in the last 3 1/2 years. Great going!
  1. Democrats passed the Wounded Warrior Bill, improving military health care and providing a 3.5% pay raise to our troops.
Wow, one good thing in 3 1/2 years and it was already being done before the dems took control.
  1. Democrats passed a bill to better regulate the student loan industry.
All yea, give free loans to students when most of us worked hard to pay off our students loans. I know, on the back of successful people right?
  1. Democrats passed Homeland Security funding to address border and transit vulnerabilities.
Dream on, if anything this was a fake BS lie. Our borders are open as ever and we all know it. This is a total lie and a joke scam on the American people. Put some tanks on our Mexican border with military might and stop the invaders from coming in and then we will talk.
  1. Democrats passed legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations.
Wow, another accomplishment that was being worked on before they took office.
  1. Democrats passed the Stimulus bill that included $288,000,000 in tax cuts, making it one of the largest tax cuts in history.
And we are now in how much debt and the stimulus has created how many jobs? Tax cuts my butt.
  1. Democrats passed the largest land conservation law in nearly two decades.
  2. Democrats passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
  3. Democrats passed the Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act, which provided coverage to 4 million previously uninsured children.
Amazing. 2 things in 3 1/2 years that mean anything.
  1. Democrats passed the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act.
  2. Democrats passed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure (CARD) Act to protect Americans from unfair and deceptive credit card practices.
Oh yea, let those who dont pay their credit cards off the hook. Good move.
  1. Democrats passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
  2. Democrats passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, ending government bailouts of the financial sector.
Dodd and Frank. What a freakin joke to even mention the two most corrupt criminals in congress. I would not have even mentioned these two crooks.

Thank you for finally letting us know that the demNOcrats have accomplished a total of 13 things in the last 3 1.2 years.

We pay them on average 200k per year in salary and this is all they have done in 3 1/2 years?

I thought in 2006 they promised to work hard and make changes?

Only 13 major accomplishments in 3 1/2 years is not only ridiculous but is flat out wrong.

And to make matters worse, more then 1/2 of you so called accomplishments have hurt the average American, lost us jobs and cost us more money.

The worst congress in American history has accomplished 2 things in 3 1/2 years that is worth a crap.

So that takes them 1 3/4 years to get one thing done.

Sad. They are stealing our money and doing nothing in return.

Time for some changes.
